Wendy M. BeMiller, PCC-S, Therapist, on Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment
Through our work with children and adolescents in community mental health, we are learning that there are an increasing number of children and adolescents with severe emotional disturbances. These severe emotional disturbances often impact their ability to function well in school and in the community. Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment (CPST) is a service model designed to provide effective mental health care to these children and their families. By providing services in the clients' homes, schools or other community settings, we are able to assist them in coping more effectively with the symptoms of their diagnoses. The role of the CPST is to assist with symptom reduction, contact other service providers, educate our clients with regards to how to manage their symptoms and link them with other services that would benefit from them.
